UNDERGROUND UPGRADE - Faced with a court-ordered deadline to complete a critical sewer relief project in East Boston, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority needed to ensure that the required upgrades to 4.5 mi of interceptor sewer were conducted as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. To construct the project in such a heavily urbanized area, the design team opted for a variety of methods, including cured-in-place pipe lining, microtunneling, pipe bursting, and opencut excavation.
