Agentive Language in Accident Investigation: Why Language Matters in Learning from Events
Language can hinder or facilitate the ability of an organization to learn from events. Language has a strong influence on the assignment of causality, particularly when it is used to identify humans as the agents of action. Research has shown that the ascription of agency to an event is subjective and affected by the culture, biases, and spoken language of the observer. This paper suggests that linguistic framing and shortcuts can affect many aspects of accident investigation and, in some instances, may lead to undeserved blame and punishment of assumed human agents. This may create an artificial stopping point for inquiry, which can affect the ability of an organization to learn from events and create a safer working environment.
