Specific features of pre-design selection of biopositive coastal protection for beach sustainability
The article considers the emerging environmental issues of urbanized seashores, including the problem of reduction of beaches. One of the solutions to these problems is the environmentally friendly design of coastal protection and shoreline stabilization facilities, taking into account a comprehensive assessment of the impact of both natural and anthropogenic factors. The variety of engineering measures applied for coastal protection can be brought to three fundamentally different protection methods: silt retention, reinforcement of coastal massifs and reduction of the impact of wave energy on the beach area and/or bedrock coast. A system analysis of the theory of coastal protection structure design under the conditions of a set of natural hydrogeological and climatic factors has been carried out considering the characteristics of a separate recreational zone. The scope of conducted work included the on-site surveys of Crimean western coast beaches over the past 6 years and statistical compilations of the beach ecology trends, as well as experimental research of the beach formation processes during urbanization in the indicated recreational region of Crimea. We suggested and carried out a comparison of several pre-design solutions for coastal protection structures. The results proved the economic feasibility of the project “Breakwater pier made of a system of mesh-and-stone rolls with a polymer frame”, since the proposed facility not only saves the material costs and provides the stability of the structure and the efficiency of beach formation, but also ensures a high-standard level of environmental safety of the beach recreational area.
