Forensic Considerations in Sinkhole Investigations
Determination of the causes of structural damage that can result from sinkhole activity is a difficult process requiring consideration of many arcane factors. Most investigations are directed to analysis of subsurface conditions as they relate to signature conditions known to occur when sinkhole activity is present. Missing in many sinkhole investigations is a thorough analysis of structural damage as it relates to causal subsurface conditions. Several case studies are presented where careful analysis of site conditions and structural damage has provided valuable clues to subsurface conditions responsible for structural distress. Also presented is an outline of the typical phases of a sinkhole investigation that will help the investigator adequately consider failure analysis in understanding how subsurface conditions interact with the structure.
