Applicability of FRP Systems for Retrofitting Existing Buildings to Prevent Progressive Collapse
Several studies have described the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) as a cost-effective retrofit to upgrade structural deficiencies, increasing gravity and lateral load demands as well as blast mitigation of existing structures. Specific applications of the FRP retrofits include increasing the flexure or tension capacity of deficient walls, beams, and slabs, providing continuous reinforcement for inversion in loading direction, and increasing the shear capacity of columns and beams. By combining these applications, FRP can also provide an effective upgrade to address the risk of progressive collapse. In this paper, the individual FRP applications are compiled to address applicability and limitations of FRP retrofits for each of the major progressive collapse upgrade methodologies. It includes a discussion of areas where the application has been verified by testing and areas where the application is analytically or theoretically based. Recommendations for future testing to address any gaps in the empirical information are also provided.
