Coupled Hydro-Mechanical Stress Soil-Structure Interaction Simulation
The interaction of the soil and the slab foundation resting on it has been investigated by many researchers. The models used can only handle the mechanical behaviors at the soil-structure interface while the volume change of the soil is a fully coupled hydro-mechanical stress (consolidation) problem. As a result, all of these methods can not realistically simulate the moisture-dependent transient interaction between the soil and the slab. In this paper, coupled hydro-mechanical stress jointed (contact) elements are proposed to simulate the soil structure interaction between the soil and slabs, and the coupled consolidation theory is used to simulate the volume change of the soil. The proposed technology is not brand new. However, it provides a way to simulate the soil-structure interaction in a more comprehensive and realistic way. The slab can be of any shape and the ground soil can be either saturated or unsaturated. A real soil, completely characterized by tests on samples taken from a site in Arlington, Texas is used to demonstrate the proposed technology.
