The T-Shaped Deep Mixed Column Application in Soft Ground Improvement
Soil-cement deep mixed (DM) columns are widely used to support embankments on soft ground for highway and railway engineering in China. However, there are some problematic issues with deep mixing method in China, such as insufficient mixing, grout spilling, and column strength decreasing with depth. Typically, very small column spacing and gravel cushions or geosynthestic reinforced layers are required for DM columns under embankment load, to reduce the differential settlement between DM columns and the surrounding soil, and increase embankment stability. Such solutions lead to a remarkable increase in construction cost. A new type of deep mixed column called T-shaped deep mixed (TDM) column was developed to address the problems identified above. A TDM column has a larger diameter in the shallow depth, and a smaller diameter in the deep depth, creating a deep-mixed column analogous to the letter "T". The mechanism of TDM column installation, field testing results and practical applications are presented in this paper. The results indicate that the TDM method is a more economic and technologically-sound solution for soft ground improvement under embankment when compared with the conventional DM method.
