Application of Geogrid in Widening Highway Embankment
In order to study how to strengthen the connection between the widened and the old part of a highway subgrade, so as to avoid an impermissible differential settlement at the interface between the two parts of the subgrade, three sections of experimental highway embankment were constructed in the rebuilding project of Lasa-Rikaze Highway by placing geogrid layers horizontally in the widened part of embankment. After the completion of the embankment widening, a series of resilient modulus tests were carried out in field. The test results proved that geogrid reinforcement is an efficient method to strengthen the connection. When the embankment is filled with gravel soil as in the reconstruction engineering of Lasa-Rikaze Highway, an arrangement of geogrid reinforcement with reinforcement depth from the embankment surface of 150 cm and vertical spacing of 30 cm is adequate in getting a stiffer widened part of embankment than the old part to avoid an impermissible differential settlement between them.
