Influence of Antecedent Rainfall on Stability of Slopes
Although the influence of rainfall on slope stability is well understood in general, the quantitative evaluation of the effect of antecedent rainfall on slope stability has not been studied in a sufficient detail. Influence of antecedent rainfall is very important in clayey slopes, especially those located at the bank of water bodies. This study includes a case study of a landslide area located in Kathmandu, Nepal, which collapsed due to the effect of antecedent rainfall and unplanned construction activities. The failed slope was visited immediately after the failure, and geotechnical investigation was done. Meteorological information was collected. The slope was evaluated using finite element method to evaluate the weakest plane. Limit equilibrium analysis was done to evaluate the factor of safety at the weakest plane for different scenario of rainfall and unplanned construction activities. The study result shows that both antecedent rainfall and unplanned construction activity caused the slope failure.
