Unsteady Flow in Open-Type Pipe Irrigation Systems
Severe “surging” has presented a serious operating difficulty in parts of the irrigation distribution system of the Coachella Valley County Water District in California. A model study of the mechanics of surge amplification is described, a mathematical analysis of the phenomenon is presented, and a practical method of control of surging is offered. The mathematical analysis was made with a differential analyzer, and the agreement between the theoretical results and the observed results was generally satisfactory.
