Use of Trashracks as Anti Vortex Structures at Submerged Intakes
This conference paper summarizes the results of a design oriented investigation in which a trashrack was designed to reduce the formation of vortices upstream of a submerged intake of an existing facility. A 1:15 hydraulic model was built and tests were conducted until a technical solution was found. The possibility of increasing the discharge maintaining approximately the same water level, led the investigators to find the best way to reduce vortex formation upstream of a submerged intake. Comparisons are made with the studies summarized in ASCE/EPRI. It was concluded that placing an appropriately designed trashrack significantly reduces vortex formation and air entrainment at the submerged inlet.
