Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls with Constrained Reinforced Fill Zones
The paper provides a design/analysis method for reinforced soil retaining walls where the extent of the reinforced fill zone is constrained by the presence of a rock or heavily overconsolidated soil outcrop. The effect of the geometry of the constrained reinforced fill zone on the magnitude of horizontal stresses acting on the wall face is presented. For internal stability residual tensile stresses in the reinforcements at the rear of the constrained reinforced fill zone have to be dissipated either by extending the length of the reinforcements within the reinforced fill zone, or by connecting the reinforcements to low capacity anchors or nails fixed into the rigid zone beyond. A reinforced segmental block retaining wall case study with a constrained reinforced fill zone is presented where the solution for internal stability was to connect the geogrid reinforcements to low capacity anchors fixed into a quartzite rigid zone beyond the constrained reinforced fill zone.
