Analysis of Thermal Stresses Induced in Doweled Transverse Joints
A detailed 3D Finite Element (3DFE) Model is developed to examine the nature and magnitude of stresses that develop around dowel bars due to both traffic and thermal loads. The model reveals that under the standard axle load, tensile stresses of magnitudes sufficient to initiate concrete failure may develop in the concrete surrounding the loaded dowels. Compared to the effect of traffic loading, slab distortion due to positive or negative thermal gradient, at no load, does not lead to the development of large stresses around dowels. The effect of the thermal gradient on the stresses induced in concrete around dowel bars was also studied.
