Lateral Loading Experiments on Thrust Protecting Method for Buried Bend with Geogrid
A bend in a pipeline with internal pressure will generate thrust externally. For a buried pipe, this thrust is supported by the passive earth pressure through the backfill at the bend, which is typically supported by the concrete blocks. However, the use of this heavy concrete block in the soft ground is not desirable, because the local settlement of pipeline will occur. In this paper, new thrust protecting methods using vertically installed geogrid were proposed. Lateral loading tests were conducted using a pipe model having 90 mm diameter and that was attached geosynthetics vertically. Similar tests were conducted using a square model pipe assumed concrete block for direct comparison. Two types of dense condition and loose condition were used as backfill. As the results, it was found that these new methods were very effective as a thrust protecting method for lateral forces due to internal pressure.
