The cone penetration test (CPT) is a reliable in situ test method for rapid and economical characterization of sites. This paper presents some of the recent advances in CPT for site characterization. Several sampling and sensing techniques have been integrated with the versatile cone penetrometer technology. These include a miniature camera for visual identification, and various sensors for measuring stresses, pore water pressure, shear wave velocity, electrical conductivity, temperature, pH, oxidation-reduction potential, radioactivity, and hydrocarbon contamination in soils. Recently an in situ Electronic Nose-Membrane Interface Probe (EN-MIP) was developed for rapidly sniffing and identifying subsurface contaminants. This innovative EN-MIP system was successfully tested at a gasoline-contaminated site.
