The Historic Roma International Suspension Bridge
During the 1920s, private investors financed the construction of several international suspension bridges across the Rio Grande River in the hope of stimulating commercial development in the lower Rio Grande Valley. This hope met with limited success and the bridges eventually fell into obsolescence and disuse. The suspension bridge between Roma, Texas, and Ciudad Miguel Aleman, Tamaulipas is the only one of the original international suspension bridges still standing today. The bridge was taken out of service in 1979. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. In an effort to assess the structure's potential for adaptive use as part of the greater Roma National Historic Landmark District, a structural investigation was conducted by HDR Engineering under a contract with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Following a review of the historic background of the bridge, this paper discusses the results of the structural investigation and its impact on the adaptive use plan.
