Local Scour at Bridge Piers with Complex Geometries
This paper discusses local pier scour predictive equations developed by the author for structures founded in cohesionless sediments. Equations for piers with simple geometries are given first, followed by methods/equations for complex pier shapes. Scour at simple piers founded in cohesionless sediments have received much attention over the last 60 years and there are significant laboratory data for these conditions in the literature. The authors have conducted clear-water and live-bed experiments in several laboratories in the USA and New Zealand and developed predictive equations for both simple and complex piers. The simple pier equations have been published elsewhere, but are included here since they are an integral part of the complex pier equations. Much of this work was funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and reports with details of this work including example problems can be downloaded from the EDOT website.
