Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cement Concrete for Precast, Prestressed Concrete Components
Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement produces concrete with high early strength, excellent durability, limited shrinkage, and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. These properties have the potential to substantially improve the speed of production of precast products while improving performance. The compressive strength typically required for prestress release at an age of 18-24 hours can be reached in just a few hours. A series of rectangular beams was cast to evaluate the effect of CSA cement concrete on the prestress transfer behavior and prestress losses. Prestress release was targeted at 2 hours of age and at 24 hours of age, at which time the compressive strength was significantly higher. Surface strain and strand end slip were measured to evaluate transfer length and vibrating wire strain gages were embedded to evaluate prestress losses. Preliminary results show that the transfer length and prestress loss behavior is similar for CSA cement concrete and conventional concrete.
