In the theory of curved dams, the deflection of a horizontal circular arch under normal loads plays an important role. The main object of the following investigation is to derive nearly exact formulas for this deflection, as well as formulas for moment, thrust, and shear, both for arches “fixed” (encastre) at the ends and for those free to turn or “hinged” at the abutments. Since the only approximation introduced consists in neglecting the influence of shear on the deformation, the results may be characterized as nearly exact.
