Modularized petrochemical projects are sometimes located in regions of high seismicity. When this occurs, the designer is required to balance the structural stiffness and overall strength requirements of transportation loads with the ductility and detailing requirements of earthquake design. If the seismic and transportation loads are not handled effectively, then the resulting modular design can become unnecessarily costly, bulky, and inefficient.
