Effect of Secondary Flow On Sediment Transport
Secondary flow generated in the vicinity of a corner formed by the intersection of the bed and side wall of a noncircular channel affects the behavior of suspended sediments. To show the effect of secondary currents, a comparison is made between experimental and calculated sediment distribution. When plotted graphically, the sediment distributions showed that the measured isopleths of sediment and those calculated with the equation considering secondary flow are parallel and are all slightly concave upward. Isopleths calculated with the equation that does not consider secondary flow have a concave upward pattern. This research only carries the investigation far enough to show the definite effect of secondary flow on sediment transport, and to show the feasibility of employing a semi-empirical method in the study of sediment transport under influence of secondary currents.
