Stratification of Flow from Channel into Deep Lake
The flow of heated water from an open channel into a reservoir containing colder and essentially stagnant water has been studied in a laboratory flume. The basic mechanisms which can produce a variety of substantially different flow patterns are considered. The combined effects of buoyancy, viscosity, and stratification conditions in the reservoir on the flow are shown qualitatively in the case of a two-layered system. The information obtained has a relationship to the design and operation of heated water outlets into lakes and ocean outfalls.
