Dynamic Strains with Brillouin Scattering Distributed Fiber Optic Sensor
In this study, distributed sensing based on Brillouin scattering is used to measure high-resolution dynamic strains on structural components. First, single point measurements were taken over a steel beam subjected to damped-harmonic oscillations. The strain measurements were recorded every 10 ms with maximum of approximately 500 microstrains, and accuracy of 0.01%. The average frequency of oscillation was determined 4.2 Hz, which was fairly close to the theoretical natural frequency of the beam (4 Hz). Second, distributed measurements of hoop strains were taken on a concrete column section subjected to axial compression. The fiber was wrapped around a 15 cm diameter and 30 cm long section, over multiple layers. The measured strains were compared to analytically predicted and independently measured strains along the height of the column.
