Advanced Geotechnical Education and Acquiring Good Engineering Judgement through Project Experiences
As geotechnical engineers progress in their careers they are called upon, at an ever-increasing frequency, to provide engineering judgement. In this paper the issue is explored as to how an engineer should address their ongoing learning to acquire the skills and experience necessary to provide these insights. Specific project examples are used to illustrate the differences between applying engineering methods by rote, as opposed to evaluating data obtained to derive safe, appropriate, and economic design solutions.
