Characterization of Curling and Warping Influence on Smoothness of Jointed Plain Concrete Pavements
Curling and warping behavior due to temperature and moisture variations has been widely considered an influential factor affecting the smoothness of jointed plain concrete pavements (JPCP). In recent decades, extensive efforts have been made to quantify the impact of curling and warping related deflections on smoothness of JPCP. However, a standardized method to characterize the effects of environmental factors on smoothness of JPCP is still unavailable. To develop a simple methodology for assessment of curling and warping behavior, a high-speed profiler was used to document the profile during different times of day and different seasons at two concrete highway sites on U.S. 30 in Story County, Iowa. An algorithm has been developed in MATLAB to analyze the profile and calculate the pseudo-strain gradient (PSG) of a jointed concrete slab. The developed method successfully quantified diurnal and seasonal changes in deflection of concrete slabs over time and their effects on JPCP smoothness.
