Use of CPT Resistivity and Dissipation Tests for Delineating Liquid Levels in a Landfill
Cone penetrometer (CPT) resistivity and dissipation tests were used to evaluate the liquid levels in waste at a closed landfill. Resistivity results confirmed that the waste is saturated under the free liquid surface. Dissipation results indicated that the waste has no perched liquid layers. The location of the free surface based on resistivity is approximately within two feet (ft) of the levels observed in wells and estimated from dissipation tests. The CPT method was more advantageous than installing leachate observation wells only as the cost of resistivity/dissipation tests was 25% lower and a larger number of measurements were made.
