Parametric Study of an Embankment Built on Soft Soil Reinforced with Deep Mixing Columns
A numerical simulation of the construction of a large embankment built on the soft soils of the Baixo Mondego River reinforced with deep mixing columns (DMC) is presented. The study compares the influence of the solution adopted with the solution without reinforcement. A parametric analysis is also performed to study the influence of the columns' spacing and stiffness. The results are analyzed in terms of settlements and stresses, which are related to the arch effect that regulates the transfer of stresses from the soil to the columns. The results show the DMC to be very efficient at reducing settlements and consolidation time. The arch effect is naturally most expressive when the columns' spacing decreases and/or their stiffness increases, leading to a reduction of the differential settlements.
