Representation Requirements for Laser Scan Based Probabilistic Condition Assessment of Bridges
Bridge infrastructure is aging, and maintenance backlog is steadily rising due to low budgets. Therefore, accurate and timely condition assessment of bridges can support decision-makers to effectively monitor and assess structural condition for repairing/replacing elements before major damage or collapse state is reached. Improved techniques, such as laser scanning, have enhanced inspection and monitoring of infrastructure, but assessment and interpretation of the collected data remain to be challenging due to uncertainties present in them. Presence of these uncertainties calls for a need to look at condition assessment from a probabilistic perspective as opposed to the deterministic approach followed in the current practice. Given that there are different types of uncertainties stemming from various sources, to facilitate any analysis incorporating these uncertainties, would require representing them in a computer-interpretable manner. In this paper, we present a representation model that covers parameters associated with defects, scan environment and related uncertainties, which will allow us to do a probabilistic condition assessment.
