Coast Lighting in the United States
The United States Light-House Establishment at the present time has under its care and direction, not only the rivers, lakes and sea coasts of the United States and Alaska, but also the recently acquired possessions in Hawaii and Porto Rico, representing altogether 100 000 statute miles of coasts. In providing for this vast line of sea coast, the Board has endeavored to keep abreast of all recent improvements, at home and abroad, affecting the interests of the mariner. It has watched with much interest the increase in power and efficiency of the illuminating apparatus due to improvements in -the lamps and the lenses, the good results that have been obtained by the adoption of so-called permanent or long-burning lights for beacons, light-vessels and buoys, and the results of recent experiments with fog-signals and other aids to navigation.
