Analytical Study of Temporary Minimum Cover Requirements for Thermoplastic Pipes under Construction Equipment Loads
The use of thermoplastic pipes for cross-drain culverts and other highway applications is increasing. Relative to other materials commonly used for culvert pipes, thermoplastic pipes are comprised of materials with low strength and stiffness, which makes them more susceptible to buckling and excessive deflection. These attributes, however, are balanced with positive characteristics such as ease of installation, improved safety during construction, and lower costs. Carefully developed, minimum cover depth guidelines for thermoplastic pipes that are subjected to heavy construction equipment loads during construction are, therefore, needed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the minimum fill height requirements for safe use of thermoplastic pipes under construction equipment loadings. The research was accomplished through analytical methods. High-fidelity analyses were carried out using the finite element method based on a plane strain element formulation, nonlinear soil models, and the geometric nonlinearity of the soil-pipe system. This study will provide a basis for developing guidelines for engineers, designers, and contractors tasked with specifying temporary burial depths of thermoplastic pipes under heavy equipment loading during construction.
