Collapses of Single Column Pier Bridges in China
Single column pier bridge is designed with one column to support entire superstructure of the bridge. Because of aesthetics and increased clearance height, this type of structure may create, it has been widely employed in urban overpasses and viaducts in China and many countries. Apparently, the single column pier bridges have weak capability to resist overturning moment especially when heavy trucks run along the edge lane. Several collapses of single column pier bridges were reported by public media in China from January 2007 to September 2012. This paper investigates one of the bridge failures – collapse of Yangmingtan ramp structure in the City of Harbin, China. Provisions of bridge design loads specified in JTG D60-2004, general code for design of highway bridges and culverts in China, and AASHTO LRFD bridge design specifications, are briefly compared in the paper. The safety factor of the bridge against overturning moment is evaluated using the bridge design codes in China and U.S. The design loads specified in the JTG D60-2004 are conservative, and should not be blamed for the failure of the structure.
