The body of the Thompson 12-inch breech-loading rifle, fabricated at South Boston Foundry, is of gun-metal (refined cast-iron); the casting was hollow with closed breech; it was made with a sinking head, muzzle upward, and cooled upon the Rodman system, initial circumferential strnins about the bore being induced. It weighed in the rough about 160 000 pounds. (For description and dimensions, see Report of Chief of Ordnance, United States Army, for 1876, page 96.)
