Earth Retaining Structure Design
The design of some earth retaining structures (e.g., gravity and cantilevered retaining walls) can be relatively straightforward using methods that are well established by decades of successful application and structure performance. Their design follows methods presented in most undergraduate foundation design courses, and which most geotechnical engineering professionals understand. But the design of other ERS types (e.g., temporary excavation support and more contemporary earth retaining systems like anchored, diaphragm, soil nail, and mechanically stabilized earth walls) can be very complex given their sometimes unique geometry, special soil-structure interaction considerations, and ever-evolving construction means, methods, and sequencing. Design of these wall types is not routine, and typically requires specialized training and experience to tackle.
