Construction of Substructure for Lonesome Valley Viaduct, Knoxville, Cumberland Gap and Louisville Railroad
About 60 miles from Knoxville, Tenn., the Knoxville, Cumberland Gap and Louisville Railroad crosses Lonesome Valley on a viaduct about 800 ft. long and at a maximum height above the valley of 135 ft. Formerly the railroad crossed this valley on a wooden trestle which collapsed while a freight train was upon it, its collapse being due to its meager bracing. The railroad company having decided to reconstruct this viaduct, William Barclay Parsons, M. Am. Soc. C. E., the consulting engineer of the road, made designs and specifications for the work. The structure is a single-track steel viaduct of fourteen 30-ft. and five 70-ft. deck spans, the 70-ft. spans being latticed girders, while plate girders are used for the 30-ft. spans. The towers are of the ordinary type, in which all connections are riveted. Besides the two abutments, there were required to be constructed 36 piers for the towers of the viaduct.
