Three Trenchless Crossings - One Urban Waterway: Subsurface Engineering Geology at Chelsea River, Boston Harbor, Massachusetts
Within the past 15 years, three major utility crossings have been completed below the Chelsea River adjoining Boston Harbor using trenchless construction methods. These crossings were for natural gas distribution (installed by horizontal direction drilling [HDD]), electric transmission (HDD), and municipal drinking water delivery/enhanced fire service protection (microtunneling). Although the crossings were located less than one mile apart along the river, significant variations in the subsurface conditions were encountered requiring careful geotechnical engineering evaluation of the overburden soil, bedrock, and groundwater characteristics.
