Calculation of the Earth Pressures Acting on Vertical Retaining Walls from Layered and Finite Filling
Accurately calculating earth pressure acting on retaining wall from fillings is the key to ensure the safety of retaining wall design. Although Coulomb earth pressure theory has been widely used for many years, inevitably it has some shortcomings. Embankment fillings are layered and limited in road construction. Based on the assumption of movement associated flow rule, for the movement mode of translation, formula of active earth pressure acting on retaining wall from semi-infinite two-layered backfills was obtained by using the method of level-layer analysis. For two-layered and limited backfills embankment, taking the effects of bedrock excavation faces into consideration, calculation analysis of active earth pressure acting on retaining wall was carried out in different cases. By an example, feasibility of this method had been validated.
