Results of a Cement Deep Soil Mixing Test Section at Perris Dam
This paper summarizes the results of a design CDSM test section constructed at Perris Dam, a zoned earthfill dam, located in Riverside County, California. The test section includes two test cells installed by the multi-auger method and three test panels installed by the cutter soil mixing (CSM) method. Foundation soils at depth were determined to be too dense for both the multi-auger method and the CSM method. As a result, pre-drilling was required at all of the column/panel locations. Verticality problems were noticed with the multi-auger installation. The CSM method resulted in wetter, more fluid conditions during placement than the multi-auger method. As a result, sample strength of the soil-cement placed by the CSM method was significantly lower, on average, than by the multi-auger method for the same cement dosage. Sampling methods also had a direct effect on the strength measurement of the samples. Wet-grab samples tended to have a higher strength than the cored samples.
