Reconstructing the Manhattan Bridge
In 1982 the New York City Department of Transportation began an ambitious effort to rehabilitate and reconstruct the Manhattan Bridge with a budget of $1.2 billion. More than thirty years later, the comprehensive project is essentially complete, having encompassed the rehabilitation of the suspension system, a staged replacement of the entire deck, and the construction of a unique strengthening system on the suspended spans that creates a “torque tube” to reduce the rotation caused by passing subway trains.
