Design and Operational Considerations of Geothermal Energy Piles
Geothermal Energy Piles (GEP) are an innovative renewable energy technology designed to access and exploit the relative constant temperature of the ground for efficient heating and cooling of buildings. In this paper, the design issues and operational considerations of GEPs are discussed, and their basic processes and mechanisms summarized. The controlling factors, such as the properties of the circulation fluid, flow rate, soil type and pile material are also discussed. A series of numerical analyses were performed to investigate the heat exchange behavior of GEPs for a variety of operational conditions. Based on these analyses, recommendations are drawn on practices which promote the most efficient GEP operation.
