Modeling the Seismic Compression of Unsaturated Sands
Although the seismic compression behavior of sand in dry and saturated conditions has been studied extensively, the seismic compression behavior of unsaturated sands still needs further research to make reliable predictions. The approach proposed in this study considers the impact of unsaturated conditions on seismic compression by varying the pore fluid bulk modulus in the UBCSAND elasto-plastic constitutive model and by considering the impact of unsaturated conditions on the effective stress. The modified constitutive model was used to predict the response of a hypothetical unsaturated sand during cyclic loading representative of a cyclic simple shear test. Results from the model reflect the hardening expected during seismic compression, as well as a reduction in the volumetric strain increment due to the change in compressibility of the pore fluid.
