Seismic Retrofit of the US-40/I-64 Double-Deck Approach to Poplar Street Bridge in St. Louis
This paper presents the seismic assessment and retrofit design for US-40/I-64 double-deck complex in St Louis, Missouri. Analytical model, performance criteria, vulnerabilities, and retrofit measures are discussed. Major design constraints include maintenance of traffic during construction, interface with numerous underground utilities, coordination with multiple property owners, and restricted headroom for installing foundation modifications. Typical pre-1980 details requires major seismic retrofit designs for the foundations, pilecaps, columns, bentcaps, bearings, cross frames, expansion joints, cross girders, and two-girder spans.
