Wind-Induced Circulation in Shallow Water
Equations are derived for the computation of the three-dimensional circulation of water in shallow basins caused by steady wind. The equations are applicable to any wind-stress distribution and to basins of any geometry, as long as the horizontal dimension of the basin is not larger than a few thousand feet. Results of the computation indicate that circulations in areas remote from banks are unaffected by bank slope, drift velocity decreases almost linearly with wind speed, the position of zero velocity of vertical velocity-profile remains practically unchanged with wind speed and it shifts upwards in shoaling water as the bank is approached, and drift velocity decreases with flow depth in shoaling water. These results are in qualitative agreement with experimental findings reported in the literature.
