Timber Wave Screen Design and Repair Issues
The First Coast Guard District's geographical boundaries stretch from northern New Jersey all the way up the Atlantic Coast to the Canadian border. It is home to some of the oldest facilities in the Coast Guard's shore facilities inventory. Some of the remaining original stations and lighthouses here in the First District were constructed around the same time that the Revenue Cutter Service was formed. Many of the more "recent" facilities were constructed during the boom that accompanied and followed World War II. Civil Engineering Unit Providence, located in Warwick, Rhode Island has responsibility for managing all capital assets (buildings, structures, towers, waterfronts, aids to navigation, etc.) located within the First District. A common structural element found in several First District waterfront facilities is a timber bulkhead or wave screen designed to block incoming waves and provide a calm mooring basin for Coast Guard small boats and the floating docks to which they moor.
