Settlement Performance of Large Diameter Friction Caissons in Bouldery Clay
Large diameter friction caissons were adopted as foundations for a 66-storey tower block in the Singapore bouldery clay formation. The caissons were designed to carry working loads primarily in shaft resistance. Parametric studies involving interaction between the caissons and caisson cap were carried out to determine the load distribution and settlement behavior for a group of eight caissons. Insitu jacking tests performed on caisson lining shells during shaft installation verified that significant skin friction resistance could be obtained in the bouldery clay. Monitored settlements during construction of the superstructure confirmed that tolerable settlements could be achieved with large diameter friction caissons. Comparison is made with the performance of caissons for two other nearby sites.
