Durability of Cast-Iron Water-Mains
I took up some eight-inch cast-iron pipe last year, which had been in use since 1828. It was made in Philadelphia, and laid in the mill-yard of the Merimack Manufacturing Company, in connection with the force-pump, for fire purposes. Until 1849, the head did not much exceed 150 feet; since then it has been about 200 feet, exclusive of the effect of water-hammer.
