Nonlinear Response of Full-Scale Pile under Machine-Induced Coupled Vibrations
This study deals with the prediction of the nonlinear frequency-amplitude response and the soil-pile separation length of a full-scale pile under coupled vibration. The coupled vibration test is conducted on the full-scale single pile for different eccentric excitations to determine the nonlinear frequency-amplitude response for horizontal and rocking motion. To predict the nonlinear dynamic response of pile foundation, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model is developed using a software package Abaqus/CAE. The material properties of all the soil layers obtained from field and laboratory tests is used in the finite element modeling. The frequency-amplitude responses for different eccentric moments are obtained from the FE analysis, and the results are compared with the coupled vibration test results for horizontal and rocking modes separately. It is found that the resonant frequencies and amplitude values obtained from 3D FE analysis are in very close agreement with coupled vibration test results for both horizontal and rocking motion. Based on this FE analysis, the variation of the soil-pile separation lengths with the depth are also evaluated for different eccentric moments.
