Vacuum Sewer Systems—A Viable Alternative for Wastewater Collection?
The Ingenio Community is located on PR State Road 867 in the municipality of Toa Baja, about 15 miles west of San Juan, Puerto Rico. This community does not have a sanitary sewer collection system and relies on septic tanks which frequently overflow due to the high water table. These overflows pose a hazard to public health and the environment. A new project to construct a sanitary sewer collection system is under design by CH Caribe (CH2M HILL's San Juan, Puerto Rico, office). The Ingenio Sanitary Sewer System project was originally planned to be a gravity system that collected and conveyed sanitary wastewater to a new pump station.
