More than a Bridge
When the Centerway Bridge—a seven-span concrete arch structure linking the southern and northern sections of Corning, New York—was deemed too deteriorated to carry even pedestrians and bicyclists, demolition seemed inevitable. But community outcry spurred the city and its engineering consultants to look deeper—literally as well as figuratively—to determine how the bridge could be saved and returned to service as not only a river crossing but also a dynamic civic park.
