On Railroad Accounts and Returns
In the report of the Railroad Commissioners of Massachusetts for 1875 as well as in previous reports, special and needed mention is made of the great defects in the keeping of accounts by railroad companies, and of the total want of reliability of returns based on accounts so miscellaneously kept. Having had a large experience in railroad accounts, and from a personal investigation of the affairs of many railroad companies, having learned that lack of any system of accounts worthy of the name is the rule, and its existence the exception (particularly on the old and long established roads), I beg to offer the following suggestions.
