Hydraulic Performance of a Grated Gutter Inlet
Grated gutter inlets are commonly used for pavement drainage along roadway embankments and on graded approaches to overpasses. This inlet style is installed in a gutter without substantial curb and covered by a shallow V-shaped grate conforming to the gutter profile. The study reported here concerns a particular design common to Florida (Florida Department of Transportation, Index 220, Type S). Tests were conducted for two grate configurations using a one-half scale model on longitudinal slopes ranging from 0.8% to 8%. Hydraulic performance was gauged by measuring inlet capture as a fraction of total approach flow. Inlet flow was also correlated with measurements of normal depth in the gutter upstream. Mechanisms leading to bypass flow were examined as limitations to efficient hydraulic performance. Performance correlations for design are presented.
